How Infestation Ripped off DayZ

Doubting the authenticity of Infestation is all too easy. One only has to look at the copyright issues that led to change the name of The War Z to wonder just how original the game really is for Video Games Online. Ever since Infestation/War Z’s release in December of 2012, there has been a lot of controversy in the gaming community surrounding its similarities to DayZ.

Similarities

• Title - The minute The War Z was released, shortly before DayZ’s release, DayZ’s creator was understandably furious, afraid that the similar standing titles would cause confusion, blatantly wondering whether War Z was influenced by DayZ’s development.

Graphics - As far as graphics go, its clear Infestation borrowed from DayZ. There’s a clear imitation between the tall dry grasses, glim grey destroyed cities, and pine covered countryside. The only difference is DayZ feels more real. It’s more graphic and accurate to life and the map is endless, while Infestation is more like an arcade game with more limited space.

Premise – Quite obviously both games build off of a zombie apocalypse theme. In both, the players are dropped with almost nothing into a world ravaged by zombies. In order to survive, they must work together (or against one another), or separately, to find supplies like food, water, medicine and weapons. The premise is exactly the same, and quite simple: kill zombies, compete with others, loot, live, repeat.

Who was first?

DayZ went into development in 2012, the same year Infestations/War Z was released. Although some claim Infestation was in the works long before DayZ, considering the striking similarities, this is doubtful. Development can only be traced back to the creation of The War Z’s facebook page in July of 2012, but DayZ was originally released as a mod to Arma 2, and an early access version came out in May of 2012, which quickly gained popularity, despite being a shaky alpha version. It was so successful that PC Gamer named it mod of the year. This was seven months before War Z’s release.

While you might find some positives for Infestation, when it comes down to it, it is just a poor rip off of DayZ. Although copying is the greatest form of flattery, Infestation hasn’t delivered on what it promised, and certainly hasn’t improved upon DayZ’s much more original and better executed design and game play.
